Kerala and the Gulf
Malayalam is the language of Kerala and Lakshadweep, written in the rounded Malayalam script. Large Malayali communities live in the Gulf countries and in Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai, so a Malayalam version reaches viewers well beyond Kerala. It was declared a classical language of India in 2013.
Verbs that do not change
Malayalam verbs do not change for person, number or gender: ഞാൻ പോയി, അവൾ പോയി and അവർ പോയി all use the same പോയി (“went”). That removes a common dubbing mistake, getting the speaker’s gender wrong, which Hindi and Marathi dubs have to watch for.
Long words and formal vocabulary
Malayalam joins words together freely, so one word can carry what English says in a phrase, and formal Malayalam draws heavily on Sanskrit. The translation step is asked to keep roughly the same spoken length as the original. Check that the result sounds like conversation, with നിങ്ങൾ for you and everyday words, rather than a formal speech: താങ്കൾ, the very formal you, suits a news reading more than a vlog.
Video or audio
Lip-synced video uses Sync Lipsync 2 to match the mouth to the Malayalam audio, spoken by ElevenLabs v3 or by a clone of the original speaker. Audio track only gives you a Malayalam audio file to add to your YouTube video and costs less.
